Through the Eyes of Fifth Graders

Welcome to La Tercera! (or officially Escuela Cardenal José Maria Caro La Tercera) This is where I work as a teacher’s assistant in the English classes four days a week. Those silly kids you see to the left and in all the pictures below are my fifth graders. Today, they will be your tour guides! Sit back, relax, grab some “café real” and see what a normal day is like at our school here in Chile.

Josefa and Ana Maria: “Something students in the United States might not know is that our school is in the campo (the country). This school is beautiful and I learn a lot.”

Cristobal and Matías: “We are the same as students in the United States. We have classes like Language, Mathematics, and Natural Science. Our favorite is Physical Education!”

Cristobal and Matías: “Tia Elise is the best ping pong player we have ever seen!” (Okay, I lied. They didn’t say this, but I’m sure they think it!)

Cristian and Sergio: “There are a lot of acts at our school for many special things. This is our stage!”

Cristian and Sergio: “We just celebrated Day of the Teacher!”

Ailen and Javier: “This is our classroom. Each teacher comes to our room to teach. In class we write a lot! If you come visit, it is important to talk our language. We learn English and you can learn Spanish!”

Catalina and Alexis:“This is our computer lab. We use computers to look up information and to do projects.”

Martin and Alexis: “I want students in the United States to know that we are friendly here! And, we love to play fútbol or in English soccer. Look, a lot of our school is outside!”

Matias and Gasper: “I want students in the United States to know that we live in the campo! There are lots of trees and flowers, and I have two horses! This is our inspector. She is in charge of watching us and helping when there is a problem.”

Marcelo and Carla: “This is our library. I like to read. We read a lot of Pablo Neruda and Gabriela Minstral.”

Vicente, Judith, and Antonia: “This is where we play fútbol. It is right across the street from our school. Everyone here loves fútbol!”

Fabiola and Jorge: “We eat a lot of healthy food like rice, apples, and fish.”

Martin and Alexis: “This is our English class. Tia Elise and Tia Paula teach. I love English! It is fun.” Cristobal: “When we go to other countries we need to talk English.” Josefa: “It is important to learn English because I have cousins in the United States and I want to talk to them.”     Cristian: “English is important to work in jobs and so that we can help people who only speak English.” Alexis: “It is important to learn English so that we can talk with you!” Martin: “There are many foreigners here. We need English to communicate and to have relationships with them.”

Tia Elise: “I love teaching at La Tercera with Tia Paula and working with wonderful students like the fifth graders. Please come visit us sometime!”
